A Gateway to Color and Connection
Miami Beach’s skyline is about to get an artistic upgrade. Rising 40 feet above bustling Fifth Street, the 158-foot-long pedestrian and cyclist-only Canopy Bridge, designed by celebrated French artist Daniel Buren, will reconnect South of Fifth (SoFi) and the soon-to-debut Baywalk at Five Park. This isn’t just a bridge—it’s a luminous, sculptural gateway that refracts sunlight through translucent, multicolored panels, casting dynamic mosaics on the walkway and street below.
Bridging Safety and Walkability
The major thoroughfare of Fifth Street and the MacArthur Causeway has long been a barrier between SoFi’s serene beachfront vibe and the vibrant urban development westward. The new bridge creates a fully accessible, elevated crossing with elevators, stairs, and ventilation openings — thoughtfully designed to ensure safety, inclusivity, and comfort .
Public-Private Teamwork at Its Finest
This project is the result of a powerful collaboration between the City of Miami Beach and private developers Terra and GFO Investments (led by David Martin and Russell Galbut). Part of the visionary Five Park redevelopment—including a 48-story Arquitectonica tower and the three-acre Canopy Park—this bridge continues the city’s momentum toward enriched public space.
Fun fact: Part of the funding stems from a General Obligation Bond approved by voters in 2018, reflecting the community’s investment in Miami Beach’s future.
